A new chapter for Copilex
Today, we are sharing an important step in Copilex’s journey: our leadership team is joining the European Legal AI leader, Legora.
This move will allow us to keep delivering trusted Legal AI at the scale this ambition requires, together with a team of exceptional lawyers and engineers dedicated to making legal work more efficient than ever.
A three year long journey building Copilex
Copilex was born from the conviction that, if built properly and responsibly, AI could reshape the way legal services are delivered to businesses and individuals.
To make this vision a reality, we formed a small multidisciplinary team of experienced lawyers, AI engineers, and researchers, with a simple goal: build the foundations of an operating system for AI-assisted legal work.
In three years, we developed Copilex into a state-of-the-art legal AI assistant, designed to accelerate essential but time-consuming tasks, while abiding by the highest standards of legal professionals.
We did it in collaboration with brilliant lawyers in France and across the world, through structural partnerships with design partners. Their support and expertise helped us move faster, ask better questions, and raise the bar to shape Copilex into a robust tool designed to address real needs in constrained conditions.
Last year, we opened Copilex to smaller firms and businesses, because we believe that robust Legal AI improves competitiveness for businesses and protection for individuals, and that it should not be reserved for the biggest players.
We have been fortunate to see Copilex adopted by a wide range of users: solo practitioners, mid-size firms, small legal teams, entrepreneurs, and growing companies.
Many now use Copilex daily, to handle real work under real deadlines. Their trust means a lot to us.
The economic reality of Legal AI
Building and maintaining a high-quality legal AI assistant, while meeting security and reliability expectations, requires significant resources.
And in a field as competitive as the Legal AI one at the moment, all this must be done at an unprecedented pace.
In that context, the path to success depends a lot on scaling fast, which means fundraising.
Despite our best efforts, we were only able to raise limited funds. Not enough to plan a reasonably safe long-term future for our company, not without sacrificing the quality of our service, which we are not ready to do.
While our early convictions proved to be valid ones, we also realized that only a limited number of companies will be able to maintain a consistent “above-standard” quality and depth in specialized Legal AI, i.e. superior to what general AI service providers like Microsoft, OpenAI, and others, will offer in the near future.
In this context, pursuing our journey alone made no sense anymore.
So we decided that the best way for us to continue our mission was to join forces with a team that shares our ambition, and has the scale to match it.
Joining Legora to build the future of law
Today, one European company stands out in the Legal AI field: Legora.
Seeing the amazing team Max Junestrand, its CEO, has built from Stockholm in less than three years, and the products they have already shipped, made the idea of joining this company an obvious choice.
Not only do we share a common vision, we also fully agree on the ways to achieve it.
We believe that exceptional lawyers deserve exceptional support. That Legal AI will profoundly reshape the way legal work is done. That building it requires the right combination of legal, AI, and software engineering expertise. That our work is not just about software, it is to build the future of law. Put simply, we were already walking in the same direction. Legora just did what we want to do, way faster than us, with remarkable success.
Joining them is therefore for us the most obvious way to continue what we started, at the scale our ambition deserves.
What does this mean for our clients and users?
For the moment, nothing changes.
You can continue using Copilex in the coming weeks and months. Over time, we will offer you the option to move to Legora, for those who want to stay at the forefront of the Legal AI revolution.
We will communicate clearly as things evolve and ensure this transition remains transparent and aligned with your needs.
